GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — With several nights in the 20s this week, many families will be cranking up the heat. However, that may not be an option for the one in four Triad families who can't afford to heat their homes.
Thankfully, Berico and the Salvation Army formed a partnership to get emergency help to families who need it. It's called Gift of Warmth.
Will Berry is the President of Berico. He said this is the 19th year of its Gift of Warmth campaign.
“We wanted to celebrate Giving Tuesday by having a rooftop fundraiser,” Berry said. “We're having team members post up the rooftop of Berico and submerge ourselves in this cold weather and experience it as many of the folks in the triad go through each winter.”
All money raised is distributed through the Salvation Army, directly to families who can’t afford to heat their homes. Berico is not just helping its customers, but anyone who qualifies for the program. The company matches the amount of all donations.
Cpt. Chris Raymer with the Salvation Army of Greensboro said he sees the need daily.
“We have individuals already coming to see us on 1001 Freeman Mill Road,” Raymer said. “They're calling us 2735572. They are finding us because they need assistance. It’s men, women, and children. We need the community support to help us uh meet that.”
The campaign helps those who live in Rockingham County, Alamance County, and Guilford County. Cpt. Raymer said those in need of help can apply in person at the Salvation Army of Greensboro on Freeman Mill Road or the organization’s website.
The 2022-2023 Gift of Warmth fundraising campaign raised $92,734. Organizers hope to beat that for the 2023-2024 season.
