Arrest made in connection Lexington church fire, the church continues to help families as they face their own tragedy

No one has been able to go inside Jesus Comes First Ministries since it went up in flames

LEXINGTON, N.C. — New faces continue to show up at Jesus Comes First Ministries Food Pantry in Lexington.

The setup is much different since the pantry burned down during a fire two weeks ago.

Yellow tape is still up and the pastor's daughter Crissy Litte said the back of the church has yet to be repaired.

"We're looking for help financially to rebuild," Crissy said. "We could use either donations of lumber or time or anything like that because we have to have our handy cap ramp in the back. We're going to have to have our porch repaired."

The laundry list of repairs hasn't stopped Little from setting up grocery donations from Food Lion outside the church.

Before the fire, the congregation served 900 Davidson County families a month.

Opal Cogar comes to the pantry monthly.

"The cost of stuff in the stores has risen.  Now with my husband having surgery and his pay going down we just haven't been able to have what we need," Cogar said. "This has been a blessing."

Cogar was worried the food bank would shut down after the fire.

The Lexington Police Department has arrested the person they say set a church on fire during the Lexington Barbecue Festival two weeks ago. Jesus Comes First Ministries' food pantry was left in ruins but they didn't let that stop them from serving the community. More from the families they're helping, as they face their own tragedy on WFMY News 2 at 11.

"When they called and said come get what you need, just like today I came out and got some meat and produce," Cogar said. "I thought oh wow they're not giving up on us."

On the other hand, JCF Ministries is grateful the justice system didn't give up on them.

Lexington police arrested Aimee Lakey on Sunday. Police said Lakey started the fire and is in jail with a $25,000 bond.

"It's nice to know that they have someone, but it's sad at the same time that someone would deliberately do that knowing that this is a church," Little said. "It's saddening that someone would do that. "

Little said she doesn't know Lakey and wants to focus on rebuilding her church and faith in the community.

"We want to help citizens of Davidson County to make sure they have food," Little said.

JCF Ministries has started a Gofundme that they said will go to repairs and the purchase of food for families in need.
