A local church throws a back-to-school bash for the community

St. Matthew United Methodist Church prepared nearly 300 backpacks to give out to the community.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Dozens of families filled the church yard at St. Matthews United Methodist on Florida Street.

The church prepared nearly 300 backpacks to give to the community Saturday evening.

Reverend Rodvegas Ingram of St. Matthews UMC said a Back-to-School Bash is just one way to help and minister to families in need.

"With our inflation right now, there are a lot of people who just cannot afford to get the back to school supplies and pay rent. They have to make a choice, we feel like it's going to help them not worry about making that choice," Rev. Ingram said.

Attendee Brandon Williams told us a backpack with school supplies sets his daughter up to conquer the 4th grade.

"Anything helps, it doesn't matter if it's one thing or two things," he shared.

In addition to the school supply booth, people who are over the age of 18 could register to vote and seek mental health services. Hearts 2 Hands Counseling Group had therapists on site. One of their goals is to create a safe space for families as the upcoming school rush sets in.

"We are all here to break the stigma associated with mental health. Regardless of your background, mental health is beneficial for everybody,"  Owner and Clinician of Hearts 2 Hands Reavyn Williamson explained.

Rev. Ingram said the church wants to create a positive space for the community to fellowship and learn.

"It's the upmost importance that we as a church do as we can to uplift our brothers and our sisters in need. Regardless of their age," he said.

St. Matthew's UMC said it gave out around half of the 300 backpacks prepared. A spokesperson said the remaining school supplies will be distributed to several schools throughout the Triad.
