LEXINGTON, N.C. -- After two days of water problems from a major main break, people can drink and have use of their water with ease.
Wednesday morning, city officials announced that tests from water samples shows the water is safe for drinking and other use.
The break happened early Monday on Hillside Drive. It was repaired later that day only after it spewed about two million gallons of water into the street. City officials still have not determined the cause of the break.
Once water was restored, a boil water advisory was put in place for customers and businesses. Many businesses were not allowed to open because of not having water or the pressure was too low.
BBQ Center on N. Main St. opened Tuesday after the break forced owner Cecil Conrad to close the restaurant Monday.
While the restaurant was open, it could only serve bottled water and canned sodas. Staff could not serve tap water, tea or coffee.
Smokey Joe's Barbecue remained closed Tuesday. The manager told WFMY News 2 he plans to open his S. Main St. restaurant Wednesday.
Restaurants, businesses and residents are still waiting for word about whether their water is safe to drink.
The city's water treatment department collected 30 water samples from around Lexington Tuesday. A water chemist has tested the samples, but results from the tests are not expected until Wednesday.
Things are slowing trickling back to normal in the Barbecue capitol.
