Charlotte Police Officer Shot In Southwest Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer is recovering after he was shot Saturday night after responding to a shots fired call in south Charlotte.

Lt. Andy Harris was one of the first Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers to arrive at the scene at Bennington Place on Honey Hill Lane off S. Tryon Street around 10 p.m.

When officers arrived police say the suspect fired shots. Lt. Harris was shot in the abdomen. Officers returned fire and the suspect was shot along with a second suspect.

A total of three people were transported to the hospital including the officer and two suspects.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney held a 1 a.m. news conference and said Harris was alert and in good spirits following surgery late Saturday night. Putney said the bulletproof vest Harris was wearing did its job.

Harris is assigned to the Steele Creek division. He has been with CMPD since 1992.
