By First Coast News StaffJACKSONVILLE, FL -- Brenton Butler, whose court case led to an Academy Award for HBO, is behind bars in Indiana.Marion County Sheriff Deputies arrested Butler Tuesday afternoon in Indianapolis. He's accused of felony criminal confinement and battery with injury, a misdemeanor.Ken Jefferson, a spokesperson with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, says Butler was with a 17-yr-old girl that he's not supposed to be with under the terms of a previous court ruling. No word yet on why Butler was stopped in the first place.Butler's case drew national attention after his arrest in 2000 for the murder of 64-yr-old Mary Ann Stephens, a tourist from Georgia. She and her husband were on their way to Orlando to visit relatives when she was murdered at a Ramada Inn off I-95 early one Sunday morning.Two public defenders took up the case and proved Butler had been the victim of a corrupt police investigation. A jury acquitted Butler of murder.Butler's family claimed Jacksonville Sheriff's Officers beat a confession out of him. Butler sued the city. Both sides reached a settlement of just under $1 million.A grand jury probe into the forced confession found no wrongdoing on the part of officer Michael Glover, but he resigned. Glover was the son of Sheriff Nat Glover.HBO went behind the scenes and followed Butler through his ordeal in court. The documentary, "Murder on A Sunday Morning", won an Academy Award in 2002.Two other men were charged in the case. Jermel Williams pleaded guilty to second degree murder and armed robbery and received 20 years in prison. Juan Curtis was convicted of murder and received life in prison.But just last week, an appeals court ordered a new trial, by agreeing with Curtis' lawyers that the jury should've heard about Butler's confession. The State Attorney's Office is appealing the appellate court's ruling to the State Supreme Court. It could be months before the case is heard and a decision is made.
