GREENSBORO, NC- The Charles B. Aycock Neighborhood in Greensboro will decide whether to change its name.
This follows the Guilford County Board of Education’s vote Thursday to remove the former North Carolina governor’s name from the city’s middle school.
Aycock has been praised for supporting education but denounced as a white supremacist.
Aycock Neighborhood Association President David Horth said the neighborhood is split down the middle.
He wants residents to be as involved as possible in the decision making.
Horth said he’d like to mirror the school board's process by issuing surveys and holding public forums. But unlike the school board, he said he doesn't want the neighborhood association board to have the final say.
"This is a neighborhood and this is a neighborhood that respects each other,” Horth said. “We're quite a diverse neighborhood, lots of different opinions, and I just think it's really respectful that everybody gets involved in the decision.”
Horth said discussion on how to make the decision will begin at Monday's neighborhood board meeting.
