HIGH POINT, N.C.-- A Guilford County man was fatally shot on his back porch during an attempted robbery Wednesday. Vann Yates, 57, and a friend were taking a break from some landscaping work when they were approached by two suspects.
Just after noon, deputies say two men randomly picked Yates and the other man to rob. The suspects walked into the backyard, asked the men to buy law equipment, and then demanded money, according to deputies.
When Yates told the men he didn't have any, deputies say one of the suspects fatally shot him.
The man with Yates was able to run away, hide and call 911.
WFMY News 2 obtained a copy of the 911 call but has chosen not to stream the entire call because of some of the personal information shared and out of respect for the caller's safety. There are portions we are sharing. The caller is understandably scared, worried and emotional after witnessing the shooting of his friend. It's clear this random act of violence that ended his friend's life shook him to his core.
During the 911, you can hear the fear and courage in the man's voice as he begs for EMS to "come faster." In order to get pertinent information for First Responders, you also hear the 911 Dispatcher talk the man through his concerns for his friend and his fear the suspects might find him. You hear through the caller's voice as he's sharing with the 911 dispatcher just how much Yates meant to him.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at: 373-1000.
