Truist shuttering multiple NC branches

Here's why the bank is closing 3% of its 285 branches in North Carolina in March 2024.

GASTONIA, N.C. — Truist Financial Corp. said it plans to close down nine of its branches in North Carolina next year, including two in the Charlotte area

In March 2024, Truist will close 3% of its 285 branches in the state.

A spokesperson for Truist said the decision to close the nine brick-and-mortar locations comes as more clients are choosing to bank digitally.

"In response to our clients’ evolving preferences, these decisions create additional opportunities for investment in our digital capabilities," the spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson said the closures are based on "several factors including client behavior, branch traffic and transaction volume."

Truist became the nation's sixth-largest bank in February 2019, when it formed from a merger of BB&T and SunTrust. Between the summer of 2022 and 2023, the bank had closed 10 branches in North Carolina.

For the majority of branches that are closing, Truist said, clients will have access to a branch an average of about two and a half miles away.

"We understand that in-person service and caring conversations are still important to many of our clients and that’s why we’ll continue to offer access to more than 1,900 branches and 2,900 ATMs—one of the most expansive branch and ATM networks in the communities we serve," the spokesperson said.

The bank sent a letter in mid-December to everyone impacted, explaining the branch closure and where they can bank at the nearest location. It is also posting notices in branches that are closing.

"Our teammates are trained and ready to assist clients with any needs or questions you might have," Truist said, adding, "Except for clients who have a safe deposit box, people who bank at those locations won’t experience any changes with their accounts through this transition."
