CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Memorial Day is known as the unofficial start to summer, which means the travel season is just starting to ramp up.

But before you book that next ticket, let’s look at some do’s and don’ts so you’re not left asking "where’s the money?"

Many people know about cashing in airline miles and points and looking into travel insurance, but as ConsumerAffairs shows,  even if you snag a great fare, you shouldn’t stop there.

ConsumerAffairs said when it comes to picking an airline, cheaper isn't always better.

While budget airlines are certainly attractive when it comes to the price tag, they often have hidden and ancillary fees, and before you know it, that cheap seat isn't so cheap anymore.

According to Seven Corners Travel Insurance, budget airlines often have more delays and cancellations. When everyone's priority is getting to their destination, that can be a risk not worth taking for some.

When planning out things to do, ConsumerAffairs said to take free walking tours and avoid the expensive guided tours. Many cities, especially in Europe, offer free walking tours led by knowledgeable locals. It’s a great way to learn about the history and culture of a place without breaking the bank.
