In one month, online sports betting will be legal in North Carolina

In one month, North Carolina is set to become the 30th state to offer legal sports betting.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — In one month, North Carolinians can legally place sports bets.

For sports fanatics like Kyle Webb, it's a great way to connect with close friends.

"I think it's a really fun activity or hobby," he said, "It doesn't have to be for crazy money, we can be responsible about it."

To legally place his bets, he travels from North Carolina to Virginia.

"I like to keep it legal - by the book. I go up there every weekend," Webb said.

Come March 11, he will be able to place his wagers in his home state of North Carolina. He said he understands gambling can be taboo and relies on good judgment.

"Responsibility is key with gambling and sports betting. Knowing what your limits are and being able to walk away is really important," Webb said.

The American Gaming Association has rules in place to promote safe and responsible online sports betting. It recommends participants have a game plan, set a budget, and know the odds of the game your playing.

The online tax rate for sports betting in North Carolina is 18%.

"For North Carolina, that means added revenue for the state to put towards the general fund and the education system. Most importantly, towards problem gambling resources and responsible gambling education." Cait DeBaun explains.

She is the Vice President of Strategic Communications and Responsibility at the American Gaming Association.

Online sports betting starts on March 11 statewide.
