GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — One of the most helpless feelings any pet owner can have is when their beloved pet runs away. Unfortunately, scammers can take this helpless feeling and use it against you.
Guilford County Animal Services (GCAS) alerted the community about a scam targeting the owners of lost pets.
Scammers are calling lost pet owners claiming to be GCAS employees and saying they have found their lost pet, said GCAS. They claim their pet needs surgery and the owner must pay for it up front.
The GCAS said they will never contact a lost pet owner for payment for medical procedures.
If this happens to you, you can verify the call is authentic by calling 336-641-3400, according to GCAS. You can also contact your local law enforcement if you're a victim of this scam.
