Did you like to order to-go cocktails in 2020? A new bill proposes to make it permanent

SB 527 proposes to allow the sale of to-go cocktails with the purchase of food.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — A new alcohol law may be coming to North Carolina, it would allow you to add an alcoholic drink to your to-go order.

SB 527 proposes to allow licensed establishments to sell to-go mixed drinks with the purchase of food. The bill also states that the drinks must be in a secured container.

The ease of taking your drink home, doesn't change the rules to consume it.

Adults who are 21+ still have to show their ID and the law explicitly states the container must be sealed while driving.

The bill states these rules also apply for delivery services, an option some patrons told us works for a busy lifestyle.

"Pick-up cocktails to-go and still be able to be at home. Be a mom, be with my husband, be with my child, and be able to enjoy a nice dinner like I would out. I would like to have those options," patron Veronica Hairston said.

Cocktail Cove in Downtown Greensboro only sells drinks. Managing partner Michael Duquette told WFMY News 2 the bar is currently a part of Greensboro's Social District. He said to-go drinks are not as popular.

"It's probably just a few times a week, not even every day. A lot of people come here for their before or after dinner cocktails," Duquette shared.

He said patrons prefer to enjoy their craft cocktails in-person. Duquette told us instead the state should look into solutions for stock liquors in craft cocktail bars.

SB 527 has made its way through the state legislature. It currently sits on Governor Roy Cooper's desk. He can choose to sign it or veto it.
