GREENSBORO, N.C. — The summer season means more people will get outside and enjoy things like trips to the pool, beach, and other outdoor activities.
Sunglasses make a big difference in someone's eye health, according to Dr. Rachael Wruble from the North Carolina Optometric Society. She shared tips for keeping eyes healthy throughout the summer.
Making sure your eyes are protected every time you head outside is important, but you don't want to buy any random pair. Fake sunglasses can do more harm than not wearing any sunglasses at all.
The type of sunglasses you buy matters.
- Buy sunglasses with a quality lens
- Sunglasses should have a marking that says 100% UVA UVB protection
- Polarized options help protect from glares
- Prescription sunglasses help people who struggle with their vision
- Transition glasses which transition from regular glasses to sunglasses when in sunlight
In addition to sunglasses, wide brim hats provide great sun protection in the summer, as well as wider wraparound sunglasses. The skin around a person's eyes is very sensitive to sunlight. It's where 10% of skin cancer is found.
