TOOL, TX -- A North Texas man claims he is being billed for toll plaza trips he is not responsible for taking.
David Bartlett of Tool, TX says the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) is sending him regular bills for toll trips from a car he sold in 2013. Bartlett claims the person he sold his old Nissan Maxima to may be behind those toll fees.
"I am past frustration," said Bartlett. "I am almost at the point of being very angry."
Bartlett says he is angry the invoices total nearly $1,500 for a license plate and car he no longer owns.
"There was just no way I could rack up this much in tolls," said Bartlett.
He claims the problem came after selling his Nissan Maxima to a Carrollton man through Craigslist back in 2013.
"The bills started approximately the day after I sold the car," Bartlett explained. "He runs approximately six tolls a day, I guess to work and back."
Bartlett admits he neglected to remove his license plates before selling that car. Now, he says he is getting stuck with the toll bills that keep racking up.
"I had no idea you were supposed to take your license plate off of your car," said Bartlett.
The man says, for months, he has been trying to convince the NTTA he is not the one running up the toll fees.
Michael Rey, a spokesman from the North Texas Tollway Authority says, by law, NTTA must send the invoice to the registered owner of the plates.
In this case, Rey says records show Bartlett did not complete a Vehicle Transfer Notice until October 2014, nor has Bartlett been able to produce the car's bill of sale, as the NTTA advised.
"It was misplaced," said Bartlett, "I mean it had been so long."
It is an unfortunate situation that has turned into a learning lesson for Bartlett.
"I would go to jail and sit it out if I have to," said Bartlett. "Just to make the point that, you know, this is just not going to go."
For now, Bartlett says he is prepared to fight the toll bills in court.
