Triad sheriff's offices struggling to hire detention officers

Despite sign-on bonuses and informational sessions on benefits, Triad sheriff's offices say few applications are coming in.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Demand is high for detention officers in the Triad.

Despite informational sessions, sign-on bonuses, and job fairs - few applications are coming in.

Many of our local sheriff's offices are doing what they can to bring in fresh faces to their departments, including meeting the people where they are - on social media.

ALAMANCE COUNTY

The Alamance County Sheriff's Office hosted a career fair on Monday and posted more about the benefits of joining the department. The starting salary in Alamance County is just over $41,000 with room for career advancement.

RANDOLPH COUNTY

The Randolph County Sheriff's Office posted about its need for detention officers on its Facebook page. RCSO also promoted the career fair it will host on Thursday at the sheriff's office in Asheboro. It's from 6-8 p.m.

GUILFORD COUNTY

In Guilford County, Sheriff Danny Rogers and his team find themselves with a big hole to fill as well.

"Currently, in our detention center, we have 77 vacancies that we're trying to fill...it's a great job to have, great benefits with the county, and we want to get that information to the people so they feel comfortable applying and about the position," Captain David Pruitt said.

These agencies need these positions filled as soon as possible.

"It's important to fill those vacancies for the safety of our officers and the safety of our residents in the detention centers. It's an important job. We have to make sure everyone is safe, so we want to make sure we get those vacancies filled," Captain Pruitt said.
