MEBANE, N.C. — A sweet development is happening in Mebane.
Local leaders announced Tuesday that candy brand Hi-Chew is expanding operations at its facility off Wilson Road, creating 204 new jobs by 2030. It's a $136 million investment.
Hi-Chew candy is made by Japanese company Morinaga.
The new positions will include production, quality assurance, and maintenance and support staff. Orange County officials said the majority of those jobs will make around $49,000 annually.
Cooper said North Carolina continues to attract business from Japan because of how much the state offers.
“It was great to visit with Morinaga’s leadership when I was in Japan and it’s clear that the relationships we’ve made along with our great workforce, infrastructure and quality of life continue to bring good jobs to our state," Cooper said.
Morinaga's Hi-Chew plant opened in Mebane in 2015.
