Does toothpaste and bug spray work to clean headlights?

Some people say you can use toothpaste or bug spray to clean your headlights. We tested it to see if it’s true.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — You might have seen life hacks online that say you can clean off your headlights with bug spray or toothpaste. But do they actually work?

We did the experiment for you.

We used OFF! Deep Woods bug spray on one cloudy headlight and Sensodyne toothpaste on the other.

For the bug spray headlight, we sprayed a light coating. Then we sprayed it with water and wiped it down. Right away, you can see how clean the headlight becomes.

For the other headlight, we spread the toothpaste across the entire headlight. It took an entire travel-size tube to cover the light. Then we sprayed it with water. It took much longer to wipe down than the bug spray.

The headlight was cleaner than before, but there was not a huge difference.

When we take a look at the final product, the bug spray cleaned the headlight much better and much faster than the toothpaste.

These methods are not foolproof, however. Some commentators say bug spray can damage your car paint. You can always buy official headlight restoration kits if you're unsure.
