Woman dies in crash on her birthday, friend remembers his final moments with her

Two women died after a horrific crash on I-40. Another is in the hospital.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro Police said a horrific crash took place this weekend on I-40. Two women died.

Chris Coleman was close friends with one of the victims.

Coleman said he helped Shamanesha Hargrove celebrate her birthday with friends over the weekend.

"It was a night on the town. We had a couple of drinks giving her her birthday love," Coleman shared.

He said the next morning he got a heart-wrenching call that Shamanesha died in a car crash.

"If I knew it was going to be the last time I was going to see her, I would've hugged her a little bit longer," Coleman said.

The news was shocking, hearing his close friend died on her birthday.

Greensboro police said the crash happened on I-40 at the Salem Parkway - US 421 split.

Hargrove's sister Shanetta was in the car and survived, but is still in the hospital.

Police said Jane Alston was the driver. She also died.

Police said the girls were not wearing seatbelts, so when the car hit a ravine, flipped, and hit trees ripping the roof off, all three were thrown from the car.

"From what I heard they ran off the road. They might have lost control or something," Coleman said. "They were good people. A lot of people are hurt about it right now."

Coleman said Shamanesha had just graduated from Winston-Salem State University. For him, this tragedy is hard to accept.

"If I could, I would've stopped it if I could. But I do know she had a big smile when I saw her last, so it makes me feel a little bit better," Coleman said.

GPD's Crash Reconstruction Unit is looking into what caused the crash.
