National Dear Diary Day: Benefits of journaling

Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a great way to express yourself. Blanca Cobb explains how it works and how you can start journaling.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today is National Dear Diary Day, a day dedicated to the power of journaling. But why do we write in diaries? And how can this simple act make a difference in our lives?

I think the reasons are complex as to why people have been writing in diaries for centuries. For some people, it's been a way to document history and important events in their lives and the world. For others, it's a way to remember what they might forget. For others, diaries offer a safe space for self-expression. Diaries let you explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment. Whether it is a personal journey or a creative outlet, writing can be a powerful tool for personal growth.

Journaling can change your life in several ways. Journaling can help reduce stress, improve mood, and boost self-esteem. Specifically, as you write whatever's weighing on you transfers from your body to the paper. The transfer of emotional baggage can help you feel better and help you process the situation differently. Writing can boost creativity because you can figure out other ways to solve the problem. By writing down your thoughts and feelings, you can better understand yourself and your motivations.

If you're wondering how to try journaling when you're crazy busy trying to make ends meet, I have a few suggestions. Carve out 5-10 minutes to write the most pressing thoughts, feelings, or situations. You can use bullet points to save time. You can dictate your thoughts using a voice recorder app, and other apps can transcribe them. You don't have to write every day. Start with 2-3 times a week. Just write and see the difference for yourself.
