Keeping your work and personal lives separate

Blanca Cobb explains why taking the time you need away from work is so important. Plus, tips on how to leave work at work.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the constant demands of work. But with the line between work and personal life often blurred, it's important to unplug and recharge.

Disconnecting from work is important for both your mental and physical health. It lets your brain rest, reduces stress, and improves overall well-being. When you constantly check emails or take work calls outside of office hours, it can lead to burnout, and you get less done at work.

Setting boundaries is key for leaving work at work. Establish specific work hours and stick to them. Create a dedicated workspace at home to avoid blurring the lines between work and personal life. Unplug from work devices during your off-hours. Try mindfulness techniques or relaxation exercises to help you de-stress and unwind.

If you’re off the clock and a co-worker wants to talk shop, telling them you’d like to talk about their ideas when you’re back at work is okay. It’s okay to set boundaries on your time.
