GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today is National Be Heard Day! Although this holiday is about small businesses getting noticed, we're here to turn the volume up on a different kind of being heard: making your voice matter in your life!
Here are a couple of tips to remember about being heard so it doesn't become an argument. Remember to use "I" statements. Instead of accusatory statements like "You never listen to me!", express how you feel: "I feel frustrated when I bring up X, and it doesn't seem like we're on the same page." Also, timing is key. Pick a calm moment for a conversation, not when everyone's stressed or rushed. And also focus on solutions. Don't just bring up problems.
Here are a few ways to be heard at home. Instead of letting others decide about family activities, express your interest in trying a new activity. Also, share your feelings about family decisions. If you're not keen on a planned vacation or disagree with a new household rule, calmly voice your concerns. And show appreciation to family members for what they do.
Take a similar approach with friends. Share a different perspective on a group conversation. Explain your point of view. If you're struggling, open up about what's happening and what support you need. Offer a different solution to a friend's problem. Don't just agree with their initial solution. Share your own ideas and brainstorm together to find the best approach.
