The Science of Hugs

Blanca Cobb talks about how hugs aren't just a sweet gesture, but how they can help you physically.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — CBS Mornings recently highlighted a heartwarming story of an 82-year-old widower, Dan Peterson, swept away by the hug of a four-year-old little girl, Nora, in a grocery store. That one hug helped Dan not feel so lonely since the death of his wife. Dan and Nora developed a friendship that lasted until he passed away in 2020.

This story got us thinking about the science behind hugs and their impact on our health and happiness. Hugs are good for your health because they trigger the release of oxytocin, often called the "love hormone." Oxytocin strengthens our bonds with others, reduces stress hormones, and even boosts the immune system. Studies have shown that regular hugs can lower blood pressure, ease pain, and even help us fight off the common cold.

Physical affection is a basic human need, and hugs, a powerful form of nonverbal communication, positively impact your emotional health. Hugs offer a powerful way to communicate empathy and support without words. This can be especially helpful for people who struggle to express their emotions verbally. Hugs provide comfort, security, a sense of belonging and help curb feelings of loneliness. Hugs aren't only for romantic relationships. Hugs with friends and family are equally important. Platonic love is a cornerstone of emotional well-being.

While how we express our need for hugs might change with age, the positive impact remains. For children, hugs are crucial for healthy development. They provide a sense of security, comfort, and love, which helps build trust and emotional resilience. For older adults, hugs can combat loneliness. Physical touch can be incredibly comforting and provide a sense of security and belonging.
