The impact texting has on us and when to do it

Texting is very convenient and can save time, but it isn't a replacement for talking. Blanca Cobb explains what needs more than a text and how it impacts us.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's National Cell Phone Courtesy Month, and this morning, we're diving deeper - how does texting all the time impact us beyond just annoying ringtones? The constant, quick bursts of information can shorten your ability to focus on complex tasks. Also, the anticipation of receiving texts can interfere with concentration on a given task. Your brain gets used to the rapid back-and-forth, making it harder to concentrate on sustained activities.

When it comes to communication skills, texting relies on abbreviations, emojis, and information language. While great for casual chats, it can get in the way of your ability to express yourself clearly in more formal settings. Tone and sarcasm get lost in texts, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts in face-to-face talks.

Regarding relationships, relying too much on texting can weaken real-life bonds. Face-to-face interactions allow for deeper emotional connection and empathy, which can get lost in texts.
