Don’t be scared, take that solo trip!

Have your friends ever bailed on you, leaving you lonely at social events? Body language expert, Blanca Cobb, says you should enjoy your plans anyway.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Ever wanted to try a new restaurant or join a gym but chickened out because your friend bailed? Or longed for a weekend getaway but felt lost without a travel buddy? If you find yourself waiting for the perfect companion to try something new or face something that frightens you, this can lead to missed opportunities.

Relying on others to do things with you prevents you from stepping outside your comfort zone. You can stay stuck if you're only willing to do something scary or uncomfortable if you have a friend. You can miss out on experiences that could bring you happiness, confidence, and a deeper sense of self-reliance. And you're left powerless and bored when plans fall through. And you rob yourself of the opportunity to grow and figure out what you're made of.

Fear, anxiety, and lack of confidence are major reasons that some people depend on doing new and challenging things with their friends. Stepping outside your comfort zone can be nerve-wracking, and having someone with you gives you a sense of security. Also, if you have low self-esteem, you might hesitate to do things by yourself because you don't want to be judged or feel awkward. Having a friend with you can help boost your confidence.

Here are some key steps to stop being dependent on your friends.

  1. Figure out exactly what you're scared of if you do something by yourself without your friend.
  2. Instead of jumping straight into something major, like a solo trip, pick a more minor activity, like trying a new coffee shop.
  3. Also, reframe your solitary activities from something lonely to an opportunity for self-discovery. This will allow you to focus on positive aspects like independence, self-reliance, and personal growth.
