Respiratory Illness season is here

Experts recommend it's best to to keep up with current vaccinations.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — We are entering respiratory illness season.

Medical professionals warn that this a time where viruses including: COVID-19, the Flu and RSV are more likely to spread.

State data shows more people have tested positive for COVID-19 over the last two months.

Cone Health said it saw a 32% drop in patients admitted to the hospital who tested positive for the virus.

WFMY News 2 spoke to medical experts who said it's best to get vaccinated each season to ensure your immune system can fight against respiratory illnesses.

"The viruses do shift over time, so the strains are slightly different every year. That's why it's really important to get updated, specifically Flu and COVID vaccine, "Vice President and Chief Epidemiologist, Atrium Health Dr. Katie Passaretti shared, "So that you're most protected for the what's circulating during this this actual season."

A representative from Novant Health said once you notice symptoms it's best to stay away from other people to prevent the spread.

"We also are aware that we have that window of 72 hours for treatment especially for COVID. If symptoms are consistent with COVID then we typically take the benefit of the doubt and go ahead and recommend treatment to try to lessen the burden. As long as there's no allergies," Internal Medicine Physician at Novant Health Dr. John Card said.

Doctors suggest it is best to speak with your primary care doctor first before heading directly to an emergency room if you don't feel well.
