National Wordsmith Day | Using the Power of Words

Blanca Cobb helps viewers speak profoundly and use their speech for good.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today is May 3rd, and we're celebrating National Wordsmith Day! Words are powerful tools we use every single day to communicate. Words can build bridges of understanding, ignite revolutions, and even break hearts. So, why exactly should we pay attention to the words we choose?

You should pay attention to words because they're incredibly persuasive. Words have the power to influence our thoughts and actions. Let me give you a simple example: think about when someone asks you to do something for them, like pass the salt. You're more likely to do it if they say please than if they don't.

The power of words can be used for good or bad. Deception, unfortunately, is another way words can be used. Smooth talkers might use flowery language to hide their true intentions, or someone might sugarcoat the truth to avoid conflict.

Here are a few ways that people can use words to deceive you. One way is by using vague words when specificity is required. Words such as "about," "around," or "approximately." Another way is by using "honestly," "truly," or "to be honest" as a way to convince you. Or, sometimes they might leave out words such as the personal pronoun "I" to deflect responsibility. Or, they might use an identifying pronoun such as "her," "him," or "they" to hide someone's identity so that they can deceive you. Remember that these examples are clues, not guarantees that someone is lying. To figure out the truth, you'll need to ask more questions.
