How to read your dog’s body language

A body language expert answers your questions.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today is "Never Bean Better Day," inspired by the incredible therapy dog, Bean. Bean has touched countless lives with his love, patience, and healing presence.

There are many benefits of having a dog as a pet. Dogs are more than companions. They can improve your physical and mental health. Taking your dog for a walk and playing with them can help you stay active, get fresh air, and meet people along the way. So not only can having a dog keep you physically fit, but also social, which helps prevent loneliness. The emotional support dogs give can reduce stress and anxiety.

Understanding dog body language is important for building a strong bond with your pet. A wagging tail doesn't always mean happiness; it could also suggest excitement or nervousness. A lowered head and ears might suggest fear or submission. By paying attention to these cues, you can better understand your dog's needs and respond accordingly.

New dog owners may not realize that being a dog parent can be exhausting. Dogs have a lot of energy and require ways to unleash that energy. It's take time and patience to train your dog. And they crave your companionship and thrive on being with and interacting with you.
