Pet videos on social media's impact on our moods

Blanca Cobb explains the joy and knowledge we can gain from animals as their popularity on social media continues to grow.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Happy National Social Media Day! Our feeds are overflowing with everything from travel pics to delicious food snaps. But one category consistently dominates our feeds: our furry friends.

Watching cute animal videos triggers the release of dopamine, the "feel-good" chemical in our brains. Watching a puppy and child playing together gives you a happy boost.

Animals love their humans unconditionally. When their human is sick, they lie beside them on the bed. When their human is busy, they lie on the laptop to get their attention. When their human is in danger, they're to the rescue. Think about the dog or cat who stops a toddler from getting too close to a staircase.

Animals teach us about loyalty, resilience, and problem-solving. Think about the cats who figure out how to open doors. They also teach us about empathy by watching how they interact with each other and their humans.
