When should kids start trick-or-treating without parents?

Blanca Cobb explains how to figure out if your kids is ready to trick-or-treat solo.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Halloween is a couple of weeks away, and while parents are decorating their homes and helping kids figure out costumes, some kids are thinking about trick-or-treating solo with their friends.

Age should be one consideration, but maturity level should weigh more heavily. If your child follows directions well and is responsible, this is a better indicator that they're ready for solo trick-or-treating than their age.

Here are a few ideas to help ensure your kid's safety if they go trick-or-treating solo. Make sure they're going with a specific number of friends, like two or more. Having a cell phone accessible so that you two can check in with each other. Plan out a route and neighbor houses that they can visit. Also, have check-in points with specific neighbors. This means your neighbor will text or call you when your child arrives at their house. You can also activate GPS on your child's phone so you can see where they are at all times. And lastly, make sure that there's a time that they have to come back home.

If you're not ready for your kids to go trick-or-treating alone, here are a few ideas. Your child can go trick-or-treating with friends and their parents. Or, you can follow along at a considerable distance where you can see them but not interact with them.
