Ideas for National Opposite Day

There are safe options to indulge in for National Opposite Day. Blanca Cobb, body language expert, gives you ways to spruce up your normal day and workplace.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today is National Opposite Day, which is an interesting idea. We get so used to doing things in a certain way. What if we shake things up and do the unexpected?

You should shake things up and do the opposite for several reasons. Trying new things can lead to deeper self-discovery by revealing hidden talents, interests, and strengths you didn’t know you had. It’s also a chance to see different sides of yourself. Doing the opposite can reduce stress and anxiety. Trying something new can take you outside of your comfort zone, but it can also be freeing. Overcoming challenges and trying new things can boost your resilience and confidence. Doing the opposite can help you become more comfortable with uncertainty and change, which makes you more adaptable and resilient in unexpected situations.

Doing the opposite may not lead to success and can backfire in various ways. Here are a couple of ways that it can backfire. If you overestimate your abilities to do something without proper training and preparation, it could lead to setbacks or personal harm. Neglecting your responsibilities to do something you typically wouldn’t, could lead to negative consequences, such as taking a spontaneous trip without letting anyone know or missing work.

Here are a few tips to do the opposite effectively. Start small by changing your routine, such as trying a new food or a different route. Make sure you research if you want to try something new and unfamiliar to you. This helps decrease the chances of injury or getting lost. Think about how your actions might impact others. You want to make sure that what you’re doing is respectful to others. Most importantly, listen to your gut and pay attention to any warning signs.
