HIGH POINT, N.C. — Often times those with intellectual disabilities are counted out when it comes to being hired.
That is where the work of a local non profit comes in--if you remember A Special Blend employs adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The coffee shop opened it's first location in Greensboro in 2018 and has since expanded to a second location right here in High Point.
Board Member, DeeDee Ungetheim talked about the expansion and how it's brewing up more opportunities for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Guilford County.
"There's such a need out there. There's 13,000 people in Guilford County with an intellectual developmental disability and unfortunately about 75% of those aren't given an opportunity to work so we were like that's a statistic that needs to change and we can put a dent in that in Guilford County," Ungetheim said.
We caught up with Elizabeth Overman, a cashier at the coffee shop as she explained what she likes the most about the job.
"I love working here and I love working with the customers and meeting friends," Overman said.
Ungetheim said between both locations they now have a total of 76 crew members brewing up tasty coffee that's specially blended for the community.
"One of our baristas in the Greensboro store has worked other jobs before and he said I was always behind closed doors but here I get to interact with the community and they get to see the talents and skills that I have acquired," Ungetheim said.
