Navigating the economy as a recent college graduate

Body language expert talks about the skills required to get a job after graduating from college.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today, we’re talking about career crossroads for college graduates. CBS Mornings reported that more than one-half of college graduates are working, but in jobs that don’t require a college degree. What does this mean for a college education?

The economy plays a significant role. Some jobs require specific degrees, while others don’t as they prioritize skills and experience. Some college graduates can’t find jobs within their given field and take jobs that don’t require a college degree and are unrelated to their major. This can create a mismatch between graduates’ qualifications and available jobs.

Graduates can navigate a mismatch they may have and find jobs even if their college degree isn’t directly applicable. If a college graduate lands a job that doesn’t require the use of their college degree, then they can figure out any skills that transfer from their college degree like communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, or a foreign language that would be valuable.

If a college graduate hasn’t landed a job in their field, here are a few suggestions to make yourself more marketable. Explore continuous learning opportunities and actively network with people in the careers that you’d like to work. By being proactive and adaptable, you can navigate the changing job market to find a fulfilling career.
