GREENSBORO, N.C. — This Mother's Day, learn to be as tough as your mother.
When you were sick, got in trouble at school, had the late little league game or threw up in the car, mom was there with the same steadfast resiliency throughout your life.
When life got hard, mom knew when to put on a helmet. As an expert in making mom mad, I'm well-versed in keeping mom tough.
My mom was battle-tested well before having me and my sisters. She barned tobacco when she was young. She told me to keep with it when I played football and ran cross country. She told me that if I start something, you finish it.
Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski is an iconic coach and motivator. In the ESPN documentary Earn Everything, Coach K told his players to channel their mother whenever fatigue or disappointment set in.
"I never saw my mom sick. In other words, when I grew up, I woke up every day and my mom was there. I took it for granted. She’s never tired – or she never showed it. Be as tough as your mothers. They show up all the time, alright, and we need to show up all the time. Be as tough as your mothers."
Let's try to remember our moms every day and carry that same toughness inside us. Regardless of how talented or lucky we are, toughness can dictate how much we achieve.
This Mother's Day, let your mom's spirit be a monument to toughness – a 'Momument.'
