What's going on with Buc-ee's? Mayor gives update

It has been one year since the start of the Buc-ee's buzz. We spoke with Mebane's mayor to see where the project stands.

MEBANE, N.C. — One year has passed since the Triad first heard of the Buc-ee's buzz. Rumor had it, the mega gas station could be coming to Mebane. Since then, Mebane city council has approved plans for the popular gas station known for barbeque, clean bathrooms, and rows of gas pumps.

WFMY News 2 checked in with Mebane's mayor Wednesday, July 10th for an update.

Mebane Mayor, Ed Hooks said the city is waiting on engineering drawings and DOT plans for the roads leading to Buc-ee's. He expects the city will receive those plans by the end of July or early August.

"They have two entrances off of Trollingwood and one off of Governor Scott Boulevard into the Buc-ee's thing. So, they're widening Trollingwood, they're widening both the entrance and exit ramps to accommodate the traffic," Hooks explained.

Mayor Hooks also cleared up some confusion about the site which will sit near interstate 85/40 in Mebane off of Trollingwood-Hawfields Rd. There are a few buildings going up near the Buc-ee's site. Mayor Hooks said these buildings have nothing to do with gas station infrastructure. He said the construction is actually for another project bringing industrial buildings to the area.

"Crow sold the front 31 acres to Buc-ee's and Crow has started working on their industrial buildings in the back of this property. But again, only activity there's been is some balancing of the dirt from this 91 acres. And that's it," Hooks explained.

WFMY News 2 crews noticed a bulldozer at the Buc-ee's site Wednesday. Mayor Hooks said the company who sold the land to Buc-ee's has been moving some dirt, balancing it for both projects.

Both the road project and the building must be complete in order for doors to open, Mayor Hooks said a Buc-ee's groundbreaking could come in 2026.
