United Way of Forsyth County uses Lyft and Doordash to help people in need

DoorDash and Lyft are two services that many say make life easier. Now, two partnerships with United Way of Forsyth County are making that saying more meaningful.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — From going to a job to getting meals during winter break, Lyft and Doordash are helping the United Way of Forsyth County find new routes to those in need.

United Way of Forsyth County President and CEO Antonia Monk Richburg said you can get free rides if you're looking for a new job.

The organization was given a grant in July by Lyft, which allows them to give 250 free rides to jobs, job interviews, and job training sites.

This goes through June in a continued pilot program put on by Lyft.

It's only offered in Winston-Salem, but if it shows successful, the plan is to expand the program.

"If you're going to a job interview, you want to be sharp and ready, you don't necessarily want to be on the bus to try and get there, navigating that way, is a game changer and leveling the playing field for those that are economically challenged," Antonia Monk Richburg said.

Right now, the priority is for veterans and people who are in rapid rehousing. Those guidelines are likely to loosen over the next few months.

Monk Richburg said she wants people to call to learn more because if you don't meet the requirements, they will still be able to help.

As for if people feel moved to donate, it's only 23 dollars per ride, so any money goes a long way to keep meeting the need.

As for Doordash, the focus is on food insecurity in Forsyth County.

United Way of Forsyth County works with the school district and gets a list of families that qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch.

During winter break and spring break, the group fills the gap and provides breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

"If you are compromised in this way, in terms of not being able to meet the needs of your children during this time,  make sure that your school knows,  because if your school knows then they will notify us and we will make sure that Doordash delivers these grocery bags to your home at a time that's convenient to you," Antonia Monk Richburg said.

For either one of these services, or if you want to donate, volunteer, or get help, call United Way of Forsyth County at (336)723-3601. They will guide you in the right direction.
