Ways to feel that missing void during the holidays

Are you missing someone special this holiday season? Body language expert, Blanca Cobb, shares ways to cope.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's normal to feel a pang of sadness when you're apart from loved ones during the holidays.

But there are ways to cope with those feelings and still have a meaningful and joyful holiday season.

Sometimes, everyone can't join the holiday gathering because they have to work and can't get the time off. Just because you can't be physically together doesn't mean you can't stay connected.

Use technology to keep in touch with your loved one. Video chat, send voice messages, or even write a heartfelt letter. Plan something special for the next time you're together, whether it's a dinner, gift opening, or quiet night together.

Other times, someone might refuse to talk to you or see you. It can be incredibly painful and isolating when you're missing someone who you've had a fallen out with. It's important to remember that everyone handles difficult situations differently, and what works for one person may not work for another. Allow yourself to feel and process the emotions.

It's common to feel sad, angry, confused. Make sure to give them space. Pushing their boundaries can make the situation worse. Consider the reason they might have pulled away. Is there a conflict that needs to be addressed? Are they going through a difficult time? Understanding the situation can help you navigate it more effectively.

One of the most painful things is missing someone who has passed. When you miss them, feel the emotions as you remember and honor them. Do something in their memory, like listening to music they enjoyed, reading one of their favorite books, or cooking one of their favorite meals. You can plant a tree in their memory or volunteer for a cause that was important to them. Surround yourself with people you love. And remember to give yourself a break when it's too much.
