How to work through disagreements with children

Raising kids can be difficult especially when they start to become independent but it's important not to sacrifice that relationship over a disagreement.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Parents love their children; sometimes, even the strongest bonds can feel strained. Simple disagreements can turn into arguments, and distance grows. So, how do you repair those strained relationships before they break?

All parents and their kids have disagreements from time to time. Sometimes, feelings get hurt in the process, and no one talks about it. These hurts build up over time and create communication walls between parents and kids. As kids get older, power dynamics shift and parents need to adapt as their children gain more control over their lives. Sometimes, parents hold onto the old patterns.

Parents and kids can start healing by talking openly and honestly about their hurt feelings, what they don't like, and what they'd like to see change. The key to a successful conversation is keeping an open mind, listening to understand, and validating each other's perspectives. Remember this: taking responsibility fosters trust.

Suppose the conversation turns tense and argumentative; set boundaries for respectful dialogue. This means talking without yelling, name-calling, and criticizing. Both parents and child should agree on ground rules such as avoiding personal attacks and using "I" statements. Take a 20-minute break as needed so everyone can calm down.
