Why pranking your kids might be a bad thing

Some parents online are pranking their young children, but that might not be good for them. Blanca Cobb breaks down how it can impact children.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Not sure if you’ve seen the parent pranks on social media where moms are cracking eggs on their young children’s foreheads. Parents want to have fun with their children, but are these egg challenge pranks all that they’re cracked up to be?

Parents and children should have fun together whether it’s telling jokes, sharing laughs, and enjoying each other’s company.     Not playing pranks that makes a child feel bad, cry in confusion, pain, or embarrassment. Young children look to their parents for love, support, and protection. If a parent does something that hurts that trust, then it can have bad consequences such as fractured trust. Also, physical pranks that hurt children teaches them that hurting and embarrassing people is ok.

Instead of playing pranks, have the kind of fun where your children won’t get hurt or embarrassed in the process. Have fun where you’re laughing with your child and not at them. Participate in activities where your child is enjoying your time together and you see the positivity in their body language.
