GREENSBORO, N.C. — Today is a pawsome day because it's National Pet Day. We're here to celebrate our furry companions who bring us so much joy into our lives.
Studies have shown that owning a pet can lower blood pressure, decrease stress levels, and even boost the immune system, which means that the odds increase that you'll handle life's curveballs a little easier. Walking your dog or playing with your cat increases your heart rate and improves your mood.
Pets positively impact our emotional health by providing social interaction. Think of the times you talk to your pet about what's on your mind as you rub their fur or hold them. The touch helps you better emotionally. Sometimes, it's enough to change your mood. Pets offer a sense of companionship and unconditional love.
A drawback of relying on your pet for emotional support is missing out on human connection. And it's hard to strengthen bonds with the people in your life or solve the headaches you have with others if you solely rely on your pets for comfort. You also need people in your life.
