Talking to nervous children about fireworks

Every year Independence Day celebrations light up the skies but for some young children it can be scary.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's Independence Day weeke, a time for parades, picnics, and fireworks. But for some little ones, those loud booms can be a bit scary. So, if your child gets nervous around fireworks, don't worry; we have tips to help everyone have a happy holiday.

Some young children might be scared of fireworks because loud noises can be overwhelming, and bright flashes of light can be startling. Also, it is hard for them to know when to anticipate when the fireworks will crack. There's an element of surprise that can be startling.

One of the best things to help reduce the fear factor is to give your child headphones to help muffle the loud sounds. Noise-canceling headphones can make a big difference. Also, talk to your little ones about why we celebrate with fireworks on the fourth of July. Watching videos about fireworks can help expose your children to them ahead of time.

As mom or dad, you can anticipate when the fireworks will go off. This is a great time to hold your little one in your arms, wrap your arms around them, or hold their hand while they’re watching the fireworks can give them comfort. Make sure that they’re super close to you either standing beside you or sitting on your lap. You can rub their arms or backs, which has a reassuring and calming effect. If it's too much for your child, don't force them to watch the fireworks.
