Picking New Year's resolutions to stick to

Blanca Cobb explains what to think about when deciding what your New Year's resolutions are and how to stay with them this year.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — With New Year's around the corner, you might wonder about New Year's resolutions. So many people think of a resolution but don't stick with it. If you want to make 2024 your year, here are tips on how to make your New Year's resolution stick.

Clarity tends to be missing from resolutions. I mean to be clear on why the resolution is important to you. It isn't enough to say that you want to reduce your debt. It's more specific to say that you want to pay off a particular credit card with a specific balance. Take it one step further by adding an emotion to the resolution. For example, you could say that you want to pay off your $5,000 balance on your visa because you won't be worried about continuing to stay in debt. Clarity and emotion are important because they'll help you stick to your resolution when you lose motivation.

You can increase your odds of sticking to your New Year's resolution if you make it more meaningful. Connect your resolution to something you care about. For example, "eating more healthy meals" because you want to stay healthier and live longer to enjoy life with your spouse and children. Also, visualize yourself achieving your resolution and imagine how good it'll feel. In this same example, imagine yourself growing older with your spouse and kids and the shared experiences.

Don't let your excuses get in the way of achieving something that's important to you. Find workarounds when you're stuck, unmotivated, or you get behind. You're stronger than your excuses.
