ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The Grove Park Inn in Asheville has announced that the 2024 edition of the National Gingerbread Competition, which is held at the hotel every year, has been canceled.
The 2024 competition was set to be the 32nd in the hotel's history. According to Grove Park Inn, there will not be a traditional Gingerbread house display at the hotel this year either. There will still be holiday decor setup throughout the hotel.
Grove Park Inn has been closed since Hurricane Helene swept across western North Carolina, causing death and destruction throughout much of the area.
A total of 42 storm-related deaths were reported in Buncombe County, where the Grove Park Inn is located.
Last year's grand prize winner was titled "Christmas at Tongkonan," a play on a traditional ancestral house for people in Indonesia complete with a pasta-shell roof. The winning house was built by the Difficult Dessert Devotees of Fuquay-Varina.
