GREENSBORO, North Carolina — The Greensboro Grasshoppers are making dreams come true.
The Hoppers surprised 47 students with brand new bikes and helmets at Wiley Elementary School in Greensboro.
"To be able to help children and give them something perhaps they couldn't have otherwise is a great thing," said Donald Moore, President and General Manager of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. "It's something we're proud to be part of."
The students packed the school cafeteria Tuesday morning in anticipation of a big announcement.
The entire third-grade class wrote an essay about: "The Importance Of Being Kind" and "What It Means To Think Big, Work Hard, And Never Give."
During the assembly, teachers told the students only three bikes would be awarded to the top three papers.
But, in the end, every student went home with a brand new bike and helmet.
"I cannot believe every single third-grader in my building received a bike," said Ms. Tavy Fields, Wiley Elementary School Principal. "I'm just amazed, I'm shocked, I'm surprised. Even though I knew what was going on, just to see the look on their faces, I feel so good."
The Hoppers teamed up with a nonprofit called "Bikes For Kids" to pull off the heartwarming surprise.
The students now plan on writing a second essay about how their brand new bike changed their life over the summer.
