FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — Homecoming is a special part of every school year for high school students.
One Triad school chose to cap the week, by recognizing a student who means a lot to them.
Emma Wright was named homecoming queen Friday night during halftime at the East Forsyth High football game.
She has Down syndrome and her peers voted almost unanimously to give her the crown.
It was an emotional moment when Wright found out she won. She said so many people support her every day.
"It was pretty cool," Wright shared. "There's a lot of good people on this side of the stands. Man, it was a surprise."
Wright's dad walked her out onto the field and was with her when she found out she won. He said his family is overwhelmed with gratitude.
"We had no idea," her dad shared. "We just got dressed and got all the things done. We're just so thankful to be part of the East Forsyth family. So excited for Emma and the opportunity that they gave her tonight."
The East Forsyth principal said the gesture embodies everything he wants his school to be about. He said the district pushes each school to make inclusiveness a priority.
