'So kind and generous' | A family friend remembers Navy vet killed at Asheboro business

David Davis was killed in an armed robbery on the morning of Veteran's Day.

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A close family friend remembers their longtime friend and Navy Veteran, David Davis.

Davis was killed at his job, 64 Skillz, in Asheboro on the morning of Nov. 11 in an armed robbery, according to Asheboro police.

"I've known him since we were 5 years old, and we went through elementary, middle, and high school together. We rode the same school bus for many years," the friend said.

Davis is remembered being so kind and generous with his time and skills and it was no surprise to anyone when he enlisted in the Navy. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Asheboro to build a home and a family with love of his life, Megan.

A family friend shared with WFMY News 2 that Davis’s wife suffers from a chronic illness, and he has been her primary caregiver. Their three children also have various special needs, and Davis has been dedicated to ensuring all their needs are met around the clock.

Recently, Davis was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which presented health challenges of his own. Despite this, he continued to care for his family, often getting just four hours of sleep each night to keep up with his responsibilities, according to the family friend.

"He has always been the type to take charge and do what needed to be done, so he handled almost everything in terms of day-to-day life at home," the friend said. "In his mind, he took on that role of caregiver when he became a husband and a father, and that became his entire identity."

Davis's wife and kids were always, always his top priority and his tragedy has them just devastated, the family friend told WFMY News 2.

After Hurricane Helene, Davis and his wife, Megan, were among several friends who donated items for relief efforts in western North Carolina, the friend said.

The friend said they selflessly gave insulin and other diabetic supplies which were desperately needed, and which likely saved some lives.

"The fact that he was killed on Veteran's Day just makes this even more tragic," the friend said. "Their kids had the day off from school and were looking forward to spending the day honoring their father."

When Davis was late coming home from work Monday morning, his wife thought he may have gone to get his free veteran's day breakfast from a local restaurant. Instead, she found police officers outside her door who had come to inform her of his passing.
