98-year-old veteran named honorary sheriff of Alamance Co. days before birthday

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A 98-year-old World War II veteran has been named Honorary Sheriff of Alamance County on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Clarence Robert “Bud” Shepherd was awarded an Alamance County Honorary Sheriff’s Badge, a lapel pin badge, a framed certificate of appointment and an ID card.

Shepard was appointed the title during his birthday party; He will turn 99 on Thursday, Nov. 28th.

He was a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber during WWII. He survived his plane being shot down and being captured by German soldiers for six months.

Now, he runs the Resource Exchange Association (REA) in Graham with his son, Tim.

Honorary Sheriffs are chosen based on character, trustworthiness, and exemplary service and commitment to the citizens of Alamance County, according to the Alamance County Sheriff's Office.
