GREENSBORO, N.C. — Skills-based hiring has been on the rise. This is why companies aren't solely relying on resumes but looking at the specific skills candidates have to ensure they're suitable for the job. Soft skills such as communication skills and professionalism are included as components of skills that some hiring managers are looking for in candidates.
Soft skills such as communication skills and professionalism are critical for career success. The way you communicate can promote or sabotage interactions with others. This means your word choices and how you explain yourself can bridge or divide.
Professionalism, the way you treat people, can create a positive work environment and build trust. If you're not an effective communicator, understanding and working with you can be challenging.
Body language is one way that we communicate. Your body language either agrees or disagrees with what you're saying. Your body language reveals your feelings in ways you may not realize. For example, you might leak negativity in your gestures or facial expressions when talking to someone you don't particularly like.
There's a connection between body language and professionalism. Professionalism refers to your behavior and conduct and the way you treat others. For example, if you feel like you're a part of the team, you tend to show positive body language. However, if you feel slighted, for example, your tone of voice might change, and you might keep a physical distance from everyone else. And people may not understand the change in your body language and demeanor unless you explain how you're feeling.
