Handling stress around holiday gatherings

Blanca Cobb explains what can cause problems at family gatherings and how to deal with them.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Now that November is officially here and Halloween is behind us, many people are starting to think about the holiday season. And some people aren’t excited about upcoming family gatherings.

If there are unresolved issues within families, then get-togethers seem to cause the problems to resurface because people can’t ignore what they’ve been avoiding during the year. When you’re in the same room with a family member you have problems with, negative feelings come out.

Forcing interactions can worsen the situation because people can sense the lack of enthusiasm for the conversation, Or the convo goes flat because there’s nothing to discuss. Or, people ignore each other or whisper behind each other’s backs. Many times, it’s a recipe for disaster.

Many people have expectations for other people’s behavior. You might think that family should be polite to each other for a couple of hours while you’re together. But someone else might think that you should make amends or try to interact with them. When these expectations aren’t met, then it can cause further harm.
