GREENSBORO, N.C. — As Halloween approaches, kids are gearing up for trick-or-treating. While the focus is usually on costumes and candy, it's also a great time to teach children valuable lessons in politeness and social interaction.
Trick-or-treating is a perfect chance for kids to practice social interactions in a fun, low-pressure environment. Body language plays a big role in how we communicate, and kids can learn a lot by focusing on more than just saying 'thank you.' It's about how they carry themselves, make eye contact, and show respect through their actions.
One of the first things parents can teach is to approach each house with open and welcoming body language. This means standing up straight, smiling, and making eye contact. These simple actions communicate friendliness and appreciation without even saying a word. Another great habit to teach is using hand gestures to express gratitude. After receiving candy, a small wave, thumbs up, or placing their hand on their heart while saying 'thank you' can make their appreciation feel more sincere. It's a fun way to reinforce polite behavior, and kids love having something physical to do
Halloween can get chaotic, with lots of kids rushing to doors at once. Parents can teach their kids patience and respect for others during trick-or-treating. It's important for parents to model and teach, waiting for turns. A simple way to show patience is through body language—standing calmly, with hands by their side, or holding their candy bucket and making sure not to push ahead in line. It's also helpful to remind kids to maintain personal space when trick-or-treating in groups.
